Created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940, Tom and Jerry remains one of the most popular cartoons of all time. Cartoon Network’s Tom and Jerry Show maintains the slapstick chase antics of Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse that were seen in the original shorts. The Tom and Jerry Show Season 1 Part 2: Funny Side Up featuring 13-episodes is the follow up to last September’s Frisky Business DVD, which contained the first half of the season. Each episode consists of two cartoon shorts, clocking in at 11 minutes each.
The artwork is impressive, and the Adobe Flash animation has a streamlined, modern look but still maintains the spirit of the classic Tom and Jerry shorts of the ‘40s and ‘50s.It’s worth noting that the use of computers has enabled animators to speed up the action. It’s unrelenting; almost too fast for the eye to follow. Tom and Jerry are raucous. It’s doubtful that young children will have a moment to experience boredom.
Some of the shorts are based on the basic antagonism between Tom and Jerry that fans have always enjoyed. Others evoke the Hollywood private eye films of the ‘40s and ‘50s including “Curse Case Scenario,” “Poof!, In another unique twist, there are episodes where Tom and Jerry are pets to a pair of witches, Beatie and Hildie.
Much like the older episodes you can watch this set several times and it never feels old. This collection is really perfect for any fan, both young and old. While there are no special features the two disc collection delivers thirteen episodes that fits perfectly with the first half of the season released last September.
