The fifth season of Pretty Little Liars picks up just moments after the shocking season four finale. Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) was shot, and Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) was found alive and well in Rosewood. While everyone is affected by Alison’s return, she just might not be the same girl after being on the run. Hanna’s (Ashley Benson) ex, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) returns, but he, too, is changed. How does Mona (Janel Parrish) fit into all of this? Season five arrives with more questions than ever.
Less than thrilled about Alison’s return, Mona recruited an army of people whom Alison had bullied, including Paige (Lindsay Shaw), Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) estranged girlfriend. Also, the liars try to figure out who killed Mrs. DiLaurentis when her body is found in Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) backyard. As the season progresses, the girls begin to lose their trust in Alison. Eventually, they join with Mona to learn more about Alison, and discover that she might be Big A. Mid-season, Mona is killed and Alison is charged with her murder.
Using clues that Mona left, the Liars are able to prove that Alison was responsible for Mona’s murder. Nonetheless, they realize that someone is still helping Alison, or not? After all their detective work, the gang decides that Alison is not A, nor Mona’s killer. They try to alert the police, but A foils the plans and Hanna is now arrested and accused being an accomplice in Mona’s murder. Soon after, Alison was convicted of the crime, and Spencer, Emily and Aria (Lucy Hale) are also arrested as accessories.
In the last episode of the season, as the four girls are being transported to prison, their van is attacked and the girls are gassed. They wake up in an ugly, but intriguing dollhouse, and find Mona, alive but definitely not so well. She was being forced to play Alison, complete with blond hair and the well-known yellow shirt from the first season. Clearly things in season six—now currently airing—are going to be perfectly delicious and slightly ridiculous!
Presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, Pretty Little Liars: The Complete Fifth Season looks as good as a standard DVD presentation can. Colors are rich and vibrant throughout, and fine detail is as good as can be expected. Skin tones appear natural, and compression artifacts are minimal.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track serves the series well. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout. The track is generally front heavy, with the exception of some environment effects and the music that bleeds into the surrounds. LFE provides some added depth to the musical cues. There are no audio distortions to speak of.
English subtitles are included.
