[AMAZONPRODUCTS asin=”B00K12K4VW”]In 2001, the soccer team from American Samoa suffered the worst loss on record, 31-0 to Australia. Branded the worst team in the world, it’s no surprise that the defeat left lasting scars. A decade later, ranked at the bottom of the FIFA rankings and determined to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, the team turns to maverick Dutch coach Thomas Rongen for help.
While first time filmmakers Mike Brett and Steve Jamison have crafted a story about an underdog soccer team, at its heart, Next Goal Wins is about a group of people whose tremendous heart and love of sport can’t be extinguished despite the odds. Despite over thirty straight losses, these players continue to smile and laugh; they’re doing something they love. Their sense of optimism is contagious. It’s nearly impossible not root for them, particularly when several players reveal how a 2009 tsunami devastated their lives.
In an age when some professional athletes are making millions of dollars a week, these guys are devoting their spare time to soccer not for money or fame, but to prove themselves worthy, and a strong sense of pride in their nation. A truly touching story, Next Goal Wins is the kind of sports story nearly everyone can relate to. None of these guys have much in the way of natural talent, but their heart can’t be questioned. These days, as professional sports become more about money, driven by advertisers, the American Samoa soccer team reminds us that sports is also about friendship, teamwork, and camaraderie.
As engaging as Next Goal Wins is, the way the story is told leaves a bit to be desired. A simple voice-over would have eliminated the need for constant graphs of statistics and newspaper headlines on screen. Those looking for much in the way of competitive soccer matches may be disappointed. That footage is used only as a book end to the narrative, most of the film consists of telling the team members stories, discussing the various problems they faced on and off the field and their interactions with coach Thomas Rongen, who is dealing with his own demons.
Next Goal Wins is an inspirational story about friendship, growth, and yes, soccer that everyone can appreciate.
