An anthology series based on the 1982 horror comedy classic, Creepshow returns for a third season with Greg Nicotero and his creative team aboard again. The result is six episodes with a total of twelve segments. While Nicotero directs four segments, he is joined by the likes of Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2: Dead End), Jeffrey F. January (Highlander II: The Quickening), Axelle Carolyn (Tales of Halloween), and John Harrison (Tales from the Darkside: The Movie). All are well suited to the Creepshow universe. While some of the segments are uneven, the result is largely entertaining.
Some of the season’s highlights include the season opener, “Mums,” “Skeletons in the Closet,” “Strange Sings,” “Meter Reader,” “Time Out” and “A Dead Girl Named Sue.” I recently reviewed dome of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery and his respect for Sterling’s storytelling style and The Twilight Zone is impossible to ignore. Karmic retribution is a common thread, but there are also times when bad things happen to seemingly innocent people. To that end, it’s important to remember that Creepshow was unapologetically created for horror fans. George Romero is the guiding force— “A Dead Girl Named Sue” is set in 1968 during the events of Night of the Living Dead. Shot in black and white. It’s a high point of the season, almost reaching the level of success experienced by Rod Serling.
A strong slate of guest stars including Ethan Embry, Michael Rooker, James Remar, Mark Hamill and horror favorite Danielle Harris help elevate the series. Fans of the show will likely be pleased with most of the segments. Its also worth noting that Creepshow will return for a fourth season.
Presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, Creepshow has been given a solid 1080p transfer. The color episodes are vivid, while the monochrome segments offer fine contrast. Fine detail is excellent. There are no digital anomalies to be found. Fans should be very pleased with this transfer.
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track offers solid surround activity throughout. Effects are thoroughly engaging. Dialogue is clean, clear and concise throughout.
English and Spanish subtitles are available.
